1. Have your Honda inspected on a regular basis.

You should never put off getting the regularly scheduled maintenance done on your car, even though it's not the item on your to-do list that sounds the most exciting. If you avoid maintenance it could have a negative effect on the fuel efficiency of your vehicle as well as the overall health of the engine.

Check out our service department for some recommended regular maintenance on the vehicle.

2. Maintain the recommended level of tire pressure at all times.

Not only will maintaining your tires with the appropriate amount of tire pressure prevent them from wearing out as quickly, but it will also increase your fuel economy by 0.6%, which, according to the United States Department of Energy, will save you approximately one penny per gallon. It doesn’t sound like much, but over time, this can add up!

3. Make Sure to Use the Appropriate Kind of Motor Oil

You need to be aware of the specific type of motor oil that your vehicle requires. If you use the wrong kind of motor oil, your gas mileage could drop by up to 2%, which would cost you.

4. Make running errands as efficient as possible

Planning your trips around Macon and Milledgeville ahead of time to reduce the amount of time spent driving may take some extra effort, but it is necessary if you want to save money on gas.

Write down a list and map out your path so that you can travel as quickly and efficiently as possible before you leave. If you have the means to do so, consider delaying your trip by one or two days so that you can combine multiple trips into one and save money in the long run.

5. Apps that save money on gas can be used to locate gas stations with lower prices.

Investigate the cost of gasoline in the Eatonton and Milledgeville areas. Downloading an app that helps you find cheaper gas stations on your mobile device is a quick and easy way to save money. We recommend using the app, GasBuddy.

6. Reduce the amount of time you spend idling.

Do you give your car a few minutes to warm up before you get behind the wheel? It's possible that you're wasting gas. Idling can use a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour, depending on the size of the engine and whether the air conditioner is being used. This information comes from the United States Department of Energy. When you park your vehicle, make sure the engine is turned off.

According to an article published in the Washington Post, more modern engines simply do not require as much idle time to warm up, if any at all.

7. Find Top Tier Gas

Using gas with a higher Tier rating can help you save money. What exactly is "Top-Tier Gas"? It is a term referring to the detergents that are added to fuel in order to reduce the amount of gunk produced by the engine during combustion. You can find top tier gas here

8. Avoid Premium Fuel (Unless You Need It)

It's possible that you believe that putting premium fuel in your vehicle is an excellent way to take care of it, but automotive experts say that this is a waste of money if the manufacturer does not recommend using premium fuel. Your vehicle's owner's manual will tell you what grade of gasoline is suggested for use in it.

9. Utilize cash back and rewards programs, such as credit cards and loyalty cards, which provide you with points that can be redeemed for fuel.

When you shop at certain grocery stores, like Kroger, you can earn savings on fuel based on how much money you spend overall. Costco members can get discounted fuel with their membership as well.

10. Never Get Behind the Wheel with an Empty Tank!

It is best not to operate a vehicle while the gas tank is close to being empty. Because allowing your tank to get below a quarter of its capacity can cause additional wear and tear on your fuel pump, a good rule of thumb is to never let your tank get lower than a quarter if you can help it.

11. Curb aggressive driving habits

If you have a lead foot, you may arrive at your destination more quickly; however, this will result in increased fuel consumption. According to the United States Department of Energy, driving aggressively wastes gas and can reduce your gas mileage by 15% to 30% when you are traveling at highway speeds.

12. Put an end to running your air conditioner all the time

Yes, we are in the south, and not using the AC during those dog days of summer around Macon is nearly impossible. But some of us turn on the AC as a matter of habit. See if you can go during some of the spring and fall months without using your AC and it will certainly help with fuel consumption.  Operating your car's air conditioner uses less gas than not doing so because it is powered by the engine.

13. Consider a fuel-efficient vehicle

You may love big SUVs and pickup trucks to get around Macon, but for those long trips the fuel costs do add up. Consider a more fuel-efficient vehicle for those long road trips. Honda has a line of fuel efficient vehicles to choose from (yes, even SUVs).   You can pre-order one of our fuel efficient Hondas today!
